The New York University baseball team (12-15) dropped a pair of road contests to Brandeis University (11-15) in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16, in Waltham, MA. The Judges defeated the Violets 7-3 in game one and 6-2 in game two.
Chase Denison started the first game for the Violets and went three innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits.
Trailing 5-0, the Violets offense woke up in the top of the fourth inning with back-to-back singles from
Jack Walter and
Ryan McLaughlin, followed by an RBI double by
Adrian Spitz. Another pair of singles from
Jake Smith and
Colman Hendershot plated two more runs. But, the three runs the Violets scored in the inning were all they managed for the rest of the game.
"Unfortunately Chase was not as sharp today as he had been in his previous two starts," said NYU Assistant Coach
Aaron Walsh. "He fell behind in counts and they [Brandeis] were able to take advantage of his mistakes."
In game two, right hander
Colman Hendershot took that mound for the Violets, but also allowed five earned runs on seven hits in two innings pitched.
Again trailing, NYU tried to spark a rally in the top of the fifth by taking advantage of a Brandeis error, but was only able to put one run across the board which was scored on Smith's hit-by-pitch.
The Violets continued to cut their deficit in the top of the sixth, as
Scott Hilbrandt doubled in a run. But, the Violets were unable to score again and fell to the Judges.
"We had opportunities to win both games and we didn't," Walsh said. "We had these opportunities, but we just did not execute and we left too many men on."
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:
-
CJ Picerni went 2-3
- Walter went 1-1, scoring a run and walking twice.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:
- Walter went 3-4
-
Eli Edwards pitched three scoreless innings of relief
"Our bullpen was able to keep us in both games today," continued Walsh. "Edwards and Wells were both able to do their jobs and pitch well in both games."
NYU will return to the field tomorrow, April 17, for a final game against its University Athletic Association (UAA) rival. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
