Women's Basketball Falls at Rochester

Violets Fall 85-55

The New York University women's basketball team, ranked #14 by D3hoops.com and #15 by USA Today, faced the #9/8 University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon, February 14, at The Palestra in Rochester, NY. The Violets were defeated by the Yellowjackets 85-55.

NYU's record fell to 17-5 overall, including a 6-5 mark in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Rochester improved to 18-4 and 8-3.

"Our team is a very tough and resiliant group, led by some seniors who understand what it's like to come back with spirit. But, at the end of the day, it takes more than just fighting," said NYU Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "You really have to execute in the UAA."

The Violets got into foul trouble early on and were unable to shake it throughout. Additionally, after trailing the Yellowjackets 19-16 at the end of the first quarter, NYU hit a drought in the second and scored just two points, which helped lead to its 30-point defeat.

As a team, NYU also had a tough day shooting and finished 15-for-62 (.242 pct.) compared to Rochester's 27-of-55 (.491. pct) performance.

"The coaches and players (in the UAA) are so good that you really need to execute the offensive and defensive gameplans every possession," continued Hall-Gregory. "No matter who we had on the floor today, we just weren't consistent in that and Rochester is really a good team who I think could make a deep run in the (NCAA) Tournament."

Although she played just 20 minutes due to foul trouble, Megan Dawe led all players with a game-high 18 points and was 10-of-12 from the free-throw line.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Riley Wurtz played a game-high 34 minutes and registered 10 points, three steals, two rebounds, and two assists.

- Maya Wasowicz scored eight points and was 2-of-4 from long range.

- Kaitlyn Read and Lindsey Oldshue each chipped in seven points. Read led NYU with seven rebounds and tied Wurtz with a game-best three steals.

- Drew Cabral led the Violets with three assists.

- Mary Kronenwetter led a balanced Yellowjacket scoring attack with 15 points, while Tylar Guerrieri notched a game-high 12 rebounds.

NYU will return to action when it hosts the University of Chicago and Washington University-St. Louis at the Jerome S. Coles Sports in Manhattan next weekend. The Violets and Maroons are scheduled to tipoff at 6:00 pm on Friday night, February 19, followed by a 2:00 pm contest against the Bears on Sunday, February 21. Sunday will be Family/Senior Day.
