Men's Basketball Defeated at Rochester

Violets Drop to 7-4 in UAA Play

The New York University men's basketball team was defeated by the University of Rochester 75-63 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Sunday afternoon, February 14, at The Palestra in Rochester, NY.

"We ran into a hot-shooting team that's been playing really good basketball," said NYU Assistant Coach Adam Parmenter. "Rochester did a good job defensively taking away some of our strengths. We weren't able to overcome what was another tough UAA challenge."

The Violets (18-4, 7-4 UAA) had won four straight heading into the afternoon, including Friday's victory over #24 (D3hoops.com) Emory University, but were unable to extend that streak to five as the Yellowjackets (16-6, 9-2 UAA) were lights out from long-range all game long (10-of-19 3PT). At the same time, NYU had a tough day from three-point range and was just 3-of-19 from beyond the arc.

Despite struggling on the perimeter offensively, NYU again made its mark beneath the basket. Evan Kupferberg and Costis Gontikas led the Violets with 19 and 16 points, respectively, while the former pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds for his fifth consecutive double-double and 16th of the season.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Jay Murphy had one of his better days as a Violet. The rookie finished with eight points and six rebounds.

- Gontikas added eight rebounds.

- NYU held the slight rebounding edge over Rochester, 41-35.

- The Yellowjackets were led by Mack Montague. The junior was 8-of-10 from the floor (6-of-8 3-PT) and led all players with 22 points.

NYU will return to action when it hosts the University of Chicago and Washington University-St. Louis at the Jerome S. Coles Sports in Manhattan next weekend. The Violets and Maroons are scheduled to tipoff at 8:00 pm on Friday night, February 19, followed by a 12:00 pm contest against the Bears on Sunday, February 21. Sunday will be Family/Senior Day.
