Violets Stay Unbeaten Through Five Games

The New York University women's basketball team improved its record to 5-0 with a 84-69 victory over the College of Staten Island on Saturday, November 26, on Staten Island, NY.

NYU raced out to a 9-0 lead behind a pair of three-pointers from Kaitlyn Read and a third triple by Amy Harioka. The early run foreshadowed a quarter which saw the Violets explode for 31 points, including 23 combined from the aforementioned senior captains. NYU took a 15-point lead into the second quarter when freshman Shaye McGoey took over, scoring eight points in the frame to help the Violets to a 49-32 halftime advantage.

"We preach sharing the ball and moving it at a quick pace," said NYU Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "We did a good job of that early and that helped us get open shots which we were able to knock down."

In the second half, the Dolphins (2-2) cut the deficit to 12 with just over four minutes remaining, but NYU went on an 8-0 run, which included a pair of layups from Kayla Patterson, to put the game away.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

- Read led all scorers with 22 points and finished with a game-high nine rebounds.

- Harioka (16), McGoey (16) and Patterson (14) all joined Read by scoring in double figures.

- NYU recorded 24 assists on 34 made field goals. McGoey dished out a game-best six helpers.

- The Violets shot 54.8% (34-62) from the field and 52.6% (10-19) from behind the arc. NYU also hit six of seven from the foul line.

- The win snapped CSI's seven-game home winning streak and was the Violets' 21st-straight win in the series.

"We need to work on turning the ball over less," concluded Hall-Gregory. "I think when we are playing aggressive we aren't turning it over as much, but when we get tentative, the turnovers come more frequently."

The Violets will return to action on Tuesday, November 29, when they host SUNY New Paltz. Tip-off at the Hunter College Sportsplex is slated for 7:00pm.
