The New York University softball team completed its inaugural varsity season on Friday afternoon, May 1, with a two-game sweep of Yeshiva University at home at the Bahoshy Softball Complex on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx.
"I think in a lot of ways we exceeded expectations this year," said NYU Head Coach
Now-Allah James. "Since returning from the UAA (University Athletic Association) Championship, we played .500 ball. For a first-year program we accomplished a great deal. You could really see the progress as the season went on."
NYU (12-24) bested Yeshiva (5-17) 23-0 in five innings in game one, followed by a 24-0 victory -- also in five innings -- in the second game.
Jacqueline Tremblay was in the circle for the Violets in game one and pitched a three-hit gem. The sophomore hurler went the distance (5.0 innings), walked three and struck out a career-high 11 batters.
The Violets big offensive inning came in the bottom of the second when they scored 12 runs to really take command of the game. NYU also scored four in the home half of the first, five in the third and finished off with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Sage Scheiwiller followed up with a stellar pitching performance of her own in game two, tossing the second no-hitter in program history -- she has now thrown both. In addition, Scheiwiller retired 15 batters and struck out all but one. The only two runners (walk, error) reached base for Yeshva.
"It's all about trusting yourself and going out there and trying to be as good as you can be," Scheiwiller said. "It's a feeling that's hard to explain."
NYU again supported its pitcher's success with more offensive production. The Violets scored six in the first, 10 in the second, two in the third, and another sixth in the fourth.
"We hit really well today and that support makes a big difference," continued Scheiwiller.
