Softball Team Splits on Thursday

Violets Drop First and Win Nitecap vs. Farmingdale

The New York University softball team split a doubleheader with Farmingdale State College on Thursday, April 16, at Bahoshy Field on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx, NY.

The Violets (8-20) rebounded from an 18-4 first-game loss to take the second game of the twinbill 9-3.

Farmingdale (13-11) used a six-run fourth inning and an eight-run sixth inning to overcome NYU's 3-1 lead in the opener.

In the second game, it was the Violets who staged a comeback after the Rams scored two in the top of the first. NYU responded immediately with two runs in the first, two more in the second and three in the third to take the lead for good.

"We've been very resilient all season long," said Head Coach Now-Allah James. "Whenever we've had trouble in the first game of a doubleheader we've put together a more solid performance in the second one."

Kahala Bonsignore, who accumulated three RBIs in the game and five in the doubleheader, drove in NYU's first run of the nitecap with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. She also drove in runs with a double in the second inning and a bases-loaded walk in the third.

The Violets compeleted their scoring on Rachel Fulton's first-career home run in the fifth inning.

Sage Scheiwiller went the distance in game two, allowing only five hits and two earned runs. She recorded eight strikeouts. And, for good measure, Scheiwiller also stroked three hits.

"Sage came in and picked up the team," James explained. "We played better as a team defensively and we got big hits. That's what it takes to win a  ballgame."

DOUBLEHEADER DOINGS

- Overall, Bonsignore went 3-for-4. She hit two sacrifice flies, drew a walk and smacked her first-career home run in the opener.

- Fulton went 3-for-4 in the nitecap with two RBIs and three runs scored.

"Those two have been very consistent and having been hitting the ball hard all year long," James said.

- Colby Tarsitano had a double, two RBIs and a stolen base in game two.

- Val Schwein, who did not play in the opener, went 3-for-3 in the nitecap. She also walked and scored a run.

The Violets return to the field on Tuesday, April 21, when they host the College of Mt. St. Vinent for a 3:00 pm doubleheader at Bahoshy Field in the Bronx.
