The New York University softball team dropped a pair of road contests on Thursday, March 26, falling to Stevens Institute of Technology 11-3 and 4-1 in Hoboken, NJ.
The Violets (2-16) entered the day on a two-game winning streak after securing their first-ever victories in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 22, over Brooklyn College. Despite that, NYU was unable to overcome the one-loss Ducks (11-1).
In the first half of the doubleheader, the Violets stayed with Stevens Tech throughout the first four innings, never trailing by more than three runs and even taking a brief 1-0 lead after a two-out RBI double from
Kahala Bonsignore scored
Colby Tarsitano in the top of the first.
After the home squad put up a three-spot in the home half of the first, both teams went scoreless in the second before NYU trimmed Stevens Tech's lead to one at 3-2 in the top of the third.
Sage Scheiwiller knocked a one-out RBI double to right center to score Tarsitano once again, but was thrown out while trying to grab third on the play.
The Ducks would score two more in the bottom of the third to take a 6-2 lead, but NYU would put another one across via an error by the Stevens Tech center fielder to make it 6-3. The Ducks scored one more in the fifth and four in the sixth, though, and took the game 11-3 in six innings.
The nightcap featured a much lower scoring affair, as the two teams combined for five runs. The Ducks did their scoring in the home halves of the first and third innings, putting two across the plate in each.
The Violets scored their run in the top of the fourth in a slightly unconventional manner.
Natalie Evans reach based with a single to put runners on the corners with one out. The freshman then stole second, but the attempted throw from the Ducks' catcher was botched by the second baseman and the ball rolled out into centerfield. During this time, NYU's
Val Schwein stole home on the play for the score. Evans did get thrown out by the centerfielder while trying to swipe third on the same play.
NOTABLES:- Tarsitano finished the day a combined 4-for-7 with two runs scored.
- Bonsignore went 3-for-6 with a RBI double.
- Schwein finished 3-for-6 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
-
Jacqueline Tremblay went the distance for NYU in the nightcap, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing three earned runs with one strikeout.
The Violets will return to action tomorrow, Friday, March 26, when they host Purchase College for a doubleheader at the Bahoshy Softball Complex on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
