The New York University men's basketball team was defeated 77-60 by the University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon, February 22, in Chicago, IL.
The Violets (16-8, 7-6 University Athletic Association) found themselves trailing the Maroons (16-8, 8-5 UAA) 40-27 at the half, and despite some good play from top scorers
Evan Kupferberg and
Hakeem Harris, NYU was unable to make up the deficit. nt.
Ross Udine was able to cap a mini 9-2 run with a three-pointer at 16:13 in the second, trimming the Maroons' lead to just eight (45-37), but the Violets were unable to maintain their comeback effort.
"Chicago played really well defensively and we weren't able to force the tempo which affected out offense," said NYU Senior Assistant Coach
John Pelin. "We had a hard time getting stops and when we don't get stops, we're not able to get out in transition for those easy baskets. Chicago was able to slow down our pace offensively, so we had a tough time scoring."
HIGHLIGHTS: - Kupferberg led all players with a game-best 21 points on 9-of-11 from the field. The junior forward also grabbed a game-high-tying 10 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season and 21st of his career.
"Evan's a really good player and had another good game," continued Pelin. "He shows up to play every game. He's able to score on the low post, pick-and-roll, catch-and-finish, and he had a good game."
- Harris, who leads all UAA players with 21.8 ppg in Association play, was the game's second-leading scorer with 19 points. The junior guard was also a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line and played a game-high-tying 37 minutes.
