The New York University men's swimming & diving team will compete in two separate meets over the weekend. The Violets travel to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) on Friday, January 23, in Kings Point, NY, and then are at home for Family/Senior Day against Iona College on Saturday, January 24, at the Palladium Athletic Facility (PAF).
The Violets are coming off of an impressive
victory over Springfield College on Saturday, January 17.
Austen Blease, who was named University Athletic Association (UAA) Diver of the Week for his performance, helped lead the team to the 202.5 - 91.5 win by sweeping both the one-meter (326.75) and the three-meter (324.65) events.
Swimmers
Ethan Louie and
Jerry Crowley also performed well. Louie won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:08.38), the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.25) and participated on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:15.65). Crowley won the 50-yard freestyle (21.31) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.45) and was a member of the winning 400-yard medley relay (3:33.30).
The 7-0 Violets, #8 in the most recent
College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) rankings, will be putting their undefeated record on the line Friday. Going back to the 2010-11 season, the matchup with the Mariners has been split evenly, 2-2, but the Violets won last year's meet by a score of
174-126.
On Saturday, the Violets will face Division I Iona College for the first time in team history. In their only contest against a Division I school this year, the Violets defeated
Canisius College 238-131 at the University of Rochester Invitational on October 25.
Prior to Saturday's event, four graduating seniors, d
ivers Blease and Brian Blum and captains Crowley and Matt Kendall, will be honored.
There will be a
live webcast of the meet.
Competition will start at 6:00 pm on Friday. On Saturday, diving events begins at 11:30 am and swimming follows at 1:00 pm.
