Women's Basketball Edges CWRU 60-59

Violets Remain Undefeated on Last-Second Shot

Amy Harioka's layup with 5.7 seconds left to play provided the winning points as the #8/#9 (D3hoops.com/USA Today Sports) New York University women's basketball team defeated Case Western Reserve University 60-59 on Friday night, January 16, at the Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, OH.

Despite trailing by seven points, 27-20, at halftime and by as many as 10 points, 32-22, in the second half, the Violets (13-0, 2-0 University Athletic Association) used a 28-8 run to overcome their UAA opponent and remain undefeated.

"We did a much better job in the second half of defensive rebounding and running out of it," said NYU Assistant Coach Cassandra Loftus. "Our transition game is a big asset for us."

Kaitlyn Read scored all of her game-high 18 points in the second half to fuel the the Violets' comeback. She also finished with a game-high nine rebounds.

"Kaitlyn, mentally, is one of the strongest players we've ever coached," said Loftus. "She has the great ability to do whatever the team needs -- scoring, rebounding, defense, whatever."

Following Harioka's layup, the Spartans (6-7, 0-2 UAA) called a timeout. However, Jessica McCoy's potential game-winner at the buzzer fell short.

"Just a great display of resiliancy by our players," said Loftus.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- After shooting only 20.7 percent (6-29) in the first half, the Violets went 16-27 (59.3 percent) in the second.

- After committing 12 turnovers in the first half, NYU had only four in the second.
