The New York University women's volleyball team dropped its opening match but won its second on the first day of play at the 2011 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Friday, November 4.
The fifth-seeded Violets (20-15, 3-6), who are hosting the UAA Championship at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan, fell in five sets to fourth-seeded Case Western Reserve University (22-9, 5-4) in their first match.
The loss placed NYU in the consolation bracket, where it defeated eighth-seeded Brandeis University (9-20, 0-9) 3-0 in the semifinals. The Violets will play sixth-seeded University of Rochester in the Fifth-Place Match on Saturday at 10:00 am.
“I think composure played a big part in both matches,” said head coach
Jolie Ward. “We allowed ourselves to stay even-keeled in the win, whereas we had too many highs and lows in the first match. We did much better maintaining our composure and maximizing opportunities against Brandeis.”
The higher seed won in every other match on the first day of play, setting up a showdown between #1-seed Emory University and #2-seed Washington University in the Championship Match at 1:00 pm. A full recap of the tournament is available
