Washington Tops Emory for Title

Washington University defeated Emory University in a five-set thriller in the Championship Match of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Volleyball Championship, which was hosted by New York University on Friday and Saturday, November 4-5, at the Jerome S. Coles Sports & Recreation Center.
 
Top-seeded Emory, ranked #2 in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, won the first two sets against the #2 seed Washington, currently ranked #3 in the nation, by scores of 25-22 and 25-18.

However, the Bears (32-1) clawed their way back and after posting 25-17 and 25-20 wins in the next two sets, overwhelmed the Eagles (34-4) in the deciding set by a score of 15-8. 

Washington earned the UAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

Last season, Emory, Washington and NYU finished 1-2-3 in the UAA and all went on to reach the “Elite Eight” of the NCAA Division III Championship. Emory advanced all the way to the National Championship Match.

In Saturday morning action, the #3 seed University of Chicago (#15 AVCA) captured third place with a come-from-behind five-set victory over #4 Case Western Reserve University. After dropping the first two sets 25-18 and 25-21, the Maroons roared back to sweep the next three: 25-12, 25-15, 15-11.  

The #6 seed University of Rochester claimed fifth place by pulling the first upset of the tournament. The Yellowjackets defeated #5 NYU in four sets: 20-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-21.

Carnegie Mellon University, seeded #7, swept #8 Brandeis University 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 to secure seventh place.   

Friday's results all held true to form, as the higher seed won each of the eight matches that were played.

Emory won its quarterfinal match in straight sets, defeating Brandeis 25-22, 25-18, 25-11. The Eagles then swept Case Western Reserve 25-18, 25-15, 25-16 in the semifinals.

Case had defeated host NYU in five sets (25-20, 20-25, 25-5, 23-25, 15-3) to advance to the semis..   

Washington defeated Carnegie Mellon in its opening match 25-10, 25-13, 25-19. Then, against Chicago,  the Bears agains won in three sets: 25-15, 25-20, 25-11.

Chicago had defeated Rochester to advance to the semis, defeating the Yellowjackets in straight sets: 25-17, 25-22, 25-20.

In the consolation semifinals on Friday evening, NYU defeated Brandeis in straight sets (28-26, 25-19, 25-14), while Rochester outlasted Carnegie Mellon in five sets: 23-25, 25-17, 15-25, 25-18, 15-11.
