Box Score

Kate Agan's free throw with 6.4 seconds remaining was the deciding point as the University of Rochester defeated New York University 60-59 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) women's basketball game on Sunday afternoon in Rochester, NY.

After being fouled by Emily Foshag, Agan stepped to the line for two shots. Her first one was short of the mark, but the second one swished through the hoop.

The Violets (13-11, 5-8 UAA) had two chances to win, but Chelsea Blake's drive to the basket and Foshag's attempted putback in the final seconds were both unsuccessful.

NYU never trailed in the first half and led by as many as 10 points on two occasions before settling for a 36 28 advantage at the break.

The Violets increased their lead to a game-high 11, 45-34, on Chrissy Kilmurray's lay-up with 15:43 remaining.

The Yellowjackets (18-6, 8-5) continued to chip away at their deficit and finally tied the score at 54-54 with 3:53 left on Jodie Luther's two free throws. Rochester then took its first lead on Melissa Alwardt's two free throws with 3:17 to play.

The Yellowjackets extended their lead to 59-55 before Jen Hum-Traverso's three-pointer brought the Violets to within one with 1:43 remaining.

Following a steal by Erica Franke, Hum-Traverso was fouled and converted her first free throw to tie the game at 59-59 with 1:08 left.

Neither team scored again until Agan connected on the winning free throw.

Grace Carmen led NYU with 15 points, as the Violets shot only 30.8% (20-65) from the field. Rochester shot 42.0% overall (21-50), but were better in the second half (45.5%, 10-22).

Kilmurray led both teams with nine rebounds.

Luther led all scorers with 21 points, while Alwardt had 10.

NYU, which has lost four straight, returns to the court for its regular-season finale at Brandeis University next Saturday afternoon.
