A late first-half spurt that continued into the second was the difference in the game as the University of Rochester defeated New York University 81-68 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) men's basketball contest on Sunday afternoon in Rochester, NY.
The Violets' Keith Jensen, who scored a game-high 22 points, converted a three-ball with 2:02 left in the first half to bring NYU within six, 37-31.
However, Rochester's John DiBartolomeo scored the next five points as the Yellowjackets (14-10, 5-8 UAA) built a 42-31 halftime lead.
After NYU (16-8, 7-6) pulled to within eight, 46-38 on Carl Yaffe's lay-up with 15:25 remaining, DiBartolomeo hit a three-pointer, Colin Cubit made a lay-up and the Violets never trailed by less that double digits the rest of the way.
Jensen who connected on six three-pointers and tied a season high with three steals, raised his career point total to 994.
Andy Stein added 12 points for NYU, while Omar Meziab contributed a career-high eight assists. #D.J. Glavan# led the team with a season-high seven rebounds, as NYU out-boarded Rochester 31-24.
Nathan Novosel led five Yellowjackets in double figures with 22 points. Cubit had 14 and DiBartolomeo finished with 13, while Mike Labanowski and Bill Serle each had 10.
The Yellowjackets shot 57.1% (28-49) from the field compared to 45.1% (23-51) for the Violets.
NYU plays it final regular-season game of the 2009-10 season at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA, next Saturday afternoon.
