NYU Falls at #3 Washington, 70-50

New York University succumbed to an early 12-0 run against #3-ranked Washington University en route to dropping a 70-50 decision against its University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Sunday at the WU Field House in St. Louis.

Nine different players entered the scoring column as Hailey Kimball's 12 points led the Violets (8-6, 0-3 UAA). # Jen Hum-Traverso# added nine points for NYU, while Grace Carmen collected a team-best six rebounds.

NYu led 5-4 after a Chrissy Kilmurray putback 4:34 into the contest, but went the next 6:35 without scoring until Kimball connected on a three-point attempt. By then, the Bears had tallied 12 unanswered points, most of them in the paint, to seize a 16-5 lead.

Washington stretched its 33-18 cushion to as many as 20 before NYU pulled within 12 when Emily Foshag swished two free throws to make it 55-43 with 7:30 remaining. However, the Bears ran off 13 of the next 16 points to safely distance themselves.

In a game featuring gritty defense from both sides -- the Bears shot 34.8% (23-for-66), the Violets 29.0% (18-for-62) -- Washington prevailed by grabbing 24 offensive rebounds en route to claiming decisive advantages on the glass (56-38) and points in the paint (38-24) while going 24-for-33 from the charity stripe. Conversely, NYU made just 12 trips to the line, making 10 of them.

Janice Evans led four Bears in double digits, scoring a team-high 14 points while snaring seven rebounds. Kelsey Robb added 13 tallies, while Jaimie McFarlin contributed 12 points and 10 boards for a double-double. Zoe Unruh fell short of her own double-double, ending with 12 points and eight boards.

From here, NYU will head back to the Big Apple for a four-game homestand starting Friday, Jan. 22, with a 6 p.m. matchup against UAA rival Emory University.
