In fierce competition at the Coles Sports Center on Saturday, the NYU wrestlers won one match and dropped two against a trio of tough regional foes.
NYU, now 5-4 in dual meets this season, dropped a 19-18 decision to Rhode island College (7-1) before nipping King's College (7-13) by a score of 23-21.
In their final match of the day, NYU's grapplers took a 10-0 lead but ultimately dropped a 22-13 decision to York (PA) College (12-9-1).
Kyle Christensen was NYU's top winner, taking all three of his 125-pound bouts by decision, while #Gregg Martino# at 141 pounds won both of his bouts.
Co-captain Patrick Knight also won two bouts, including a pin over Jerry Robbins of King's in just 55 seconds.
Steven Contino (141) also won two bouts, including a win over York's All-American Kyle Flickinger.
"Steve did a great job by beating two ranked opponents," said NYU assistant coach Corey Luce. "His win over Flickinger was a great one. Our lightweights really stepped it up today."
Each of the matches were competitive and weren't decided until the final bouts.
Against Rhode Island, Richard Wapenyi's 3-2 heavyweight win over NYU's Alex Chianurashvili provided the final margin of victory.
Against King's, NYU led 23-3 before losing the final four bouts. Going into the heavyweight clash, NYU still had a five-point lead. And, while the Monarchs' Christopher Roy defeated NYU's Mark Shirian 7-3, it wasn't by enough to overcome the deficit.
Then, after going from 10-0 ahead to 19-13 behind vs. York, Shirian needed a pin to draw NYU even. He battled his much-heavier foe Shane Cooley before finally succumbing 4-0.
"Overall, we didn't;t capitalize on some upsets we pulled," Luce explained. "We had chances, but just didn't take advantage of them."
The squad returns to action next Saturday at the Metropolitan Conference/New England Duals at Hunter College.
