Mike Mobbs joined the New York University baseball team as an assistant coach prior to the 2017-18 season. His primary duties include working with the hitters and assisting with defense.
The Violets got off to a 4-1 start in 2020 before the season abruptly ended due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, several players still received accolades for their performances. Senior outfielder Coltrane Tait and sophomore catcher Grant Berman earned University Athletic Association (UAA) Player of the Week honors, while both received All-UAA honors along with junior pitcher Gabe Golob, senior infielder/pitcher Ford Ladd and freshman pitcher Michael Santorum.
The Violets posted a 26-13 record in 2019, including a best-ever 8-8 mark in UAA competition. The campaign included a six-game winning streak from April 13-21, with five of the victories coming against UAA opponents Washington University in St. Louis and Brandeis University.
Several of the team’s offensive leaders earned postseason recognition. First baseman Colman Hendershot received Third Team CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-America honors, as well as Second Team All-East Region accolades from both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and D3baseball.com. Hendershot was selected First Team All-UAA and All-ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference), and was chosen NYU’s Senior Athlete of the Year. Centerfielder Jack Walter earned Second Team honors from both the ABCA and D3baseball.com, and was named First Team All-UAA and Second Team All-ECAC. Second baseman Ryan McLoughlin earned Third Team honors from both the ABCA and D3baseball.com and was a Second Team All-UAA selection.
In Mobbs’ first season in 2018, the Violets finished with a program-record 28 wins (28-12) and a 6-10 mark in the UAA. The team went undefeated over its spring trip (7-0) and posted winning records both at home (13-7) and away (8-5). Hendershot, Jonathon Iaione, Cameron Serapilio-Frank, and Tait all earned First Team All-UAA honors, while Cooper Halpern and Ryan McLaughlin earned Second Team accolades. Additionally, Hendershot was selected UAA Co-Player of the Year, D3Baseball.com First Team All New York Region and First Team All-ECAC. Iaione was named to the UAA 30-Year Anniversary Team as well as First Team All-ECAC. Tait was selected D3baseball.com Second Team All-New York Region, while Serapilio-Frank earned Third Team honors.
Mobbs joined NYU after a previous three-year stint as an assistant baseball coach at Felician University. In 2017, Mobbs’ Golden Falcons were the only team in college baseball with the entire starting lineup selected to First or Second Team All-Conference. Additionally, Mobbs served as assistant coach at Don Bosco Prep High School from 2013-14, and was the head coach of the West Palm Beach Sharks of the South Florida Collegiate League in 2015.
A 2010 graduate of Fordham University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications & media studies and with a minor in business administration, Mobbs was a four-year member of the Rams’ baseball team. He played all three outfield positions, accumulating 153 hits, 115 runs and 33 doubles during his collegiate career while ranking among the top 15 in program history with 179 games played.
Mobbs is also the president and co-founder of Power Arm Performance, which provides sports lifestyle and performance products, and serves as an instructor and coach at the Wladyka Baseball Organization.
A native of Stony Point, NY, Mobbs resides in Wallington, NJ.
