Five NYU Student-Athletes Earn Weekly Honors

UAA and Liberty League Announce Honorees

A total of five New York University student-athletes have been recognized for their excellence during the first week of competition.

Three NYU golfers and two soccer players were cited by the University Athletic Association (UAA) and/or the Liberty League for their outstanding performances during the first week of varsity competition.

In her first collegiate tournament, Elisa Xue was chosen both UAA Athlete of the Week and Liberty League Performer of the Week. The NYU freshman posted a two-round total of -5 to win the St. Lawrence Invitational in Canton, NY. She shot -3 in Saturday's opening round and -2 in Sunday's final round. Her performance helped lead NYU to a first-place team finish. Overall, eight teams and 40 golfers competed.

Jiarui Li made her collegiate debut this weekend, as well, finishing in second place at the St. Lawrence Invitational. Named Liberty League Rookie of the Week, she shot below par in each round, carding a -2 on Saturday and -1 on Sunday as NYU dominated the leader board.

The NYU men also competed at St. Lawrence, and the Violets' Tanmay Chandra finished seventh in the individual competition. The UAA Athlete of the Week shot +1 in both Saturday's and Sunday's rounds. His performance helped lead NYU to a fifth-place finish in the 13-team competition.

On the pitch, Demir Calkap had a big opening week for the 3-0 Violets and was named UAA Athlete of the Week-Offense. He scored two goals in NYU's 3-1 opening win against Hunter College on Wednesday, then helped the NYU defense post a 6-0 shutout against Wilkes University on Saturday. Calkap added another goal and also had an assist in the Violets' 5-1 win at Misericordia University on Sunday.

For the NYU women, Maddy Tohanczyn pitched back-to-back shutouts as the Violets opened their season with a 1-0 win at Babson on Tuesday and a 0-0 tie against #8 MIT on Saturday. In the Violets' win over Babson, she made three saves, and in the tie with MIT, she turned away five shots.
