The New York University women's volleyball team opened UAA Round Robin #1 with a pair of victories Saturday, defeating Brandeis University before taking down No. 15 Emory University in Rochester, NY.
The Violets swept Brandeis (25-11, 25-19, 25-17) before defeating Emory in four sets (25-22, 25-17, 15-25, 25-17).
"We played with tremendous confidence in who we are as a team," said Head Coach
Andrew Brown, "Our setters did a great job in creating opportunities for our hitters to be successful."
NYU jumped ahead of Brandeis in the opening match with a six-point run, highlighted by three consecutive aces from
Grace Nelson. Brandeis responded with a five-point run to cut into the deficit, but the Violets closed out the set.
The teams traded points early, reaching an 11-11 tie in the second set. NYU pulled ahead with back-to-back kills from
Sienna Morales, but Brandeis battled back to cut the deficit to 18-17. However, the Violets held on to take the second frame.
NYU jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and continued to build its advantage in the final set. Back-to-back kills from Kylie Emma Obeto helped the Violets pull away and secure the win.
In the second match of the day against Emory, both teams traded points before NYU responded with a late push to close out the set.

Chloe Lemons sealing the victory.
Emory responded in the third set, building an early 5-3 lead before extending it to 14-10. NYU cut the deficit to two, but Emory held the lead and pulled away late to take the set.
NYU opened the fourth set with a seven-point lead and maintained control throughout. The Eagles mounted a late push, but the Violets closed out the set to finish the match.
Across the two matches, Nelson led the Violets with seven aces and 25 kills, while Lemons added 17.
Lily Leung anchored the defense with 24 digs, while
Kate Scherlacher and
Alden Roberts recorded 35 and 33 assists, respectively.
The Violets will take the court again tomorrow, Sunday, September 27, at noon, facing No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis in their final match of UAA Round Robin #1 in Rochester, NY.
