The New York University women's volleyball team wrapped up the first round of UAA Round Robin play Sunday against No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis in Rochester, NY.
The Violets battled the Bears through five sets before earning the 3-2 victory (25-17, 28-30, 14-25, 25-17, 15-13).
NYU opened the match with an 8-0 run and continued to control the set with two consecutive service aces by
Grace Nelson. The Bears made a late push, but the Violets closed out the opening frame.
Both teams battled through a tightly contested second set, with
Chloe Lemons answering WashU's attacks with back-to-back kills. The teams traded points late before the Bears scored the final two points to take the set.
WashU took an early lead in the third stanza, but NYU stayed within striking distance before the Bears pulled away late to secure the set.
The Violets responded with a strong fourth set, building an early lead and holding off the Bears. NYU maintained the lead throughout the set before closing out the frame with back-to-back kills from
Tatum Chase to even the match.
NYU battled WashU in a back-and-forth fifth set, with the teams tied at 10-10 before Nelson put NYU ahead with two kills to close out the match.
Nelson and Lemons led the Violets with 11 kills apiece, while
Alden Roberts recorded 23 assists.
Coco Barton added six blocks, and
Lily Leung led NYU with 19 digs.
The Violets will return to the court on Friday, October 2, hosting the NYU Welcome to October Invitational at the John A. Paulson Center. NYU will face Vassar College at 7 p.m.
