The New York University women's soccer team defeated #23 Montclair State University 2-0 on Wednesday, September 23, at Lubetkin Field in Newark, NJ.
With the win, the Violets handed the Redhawks their first regular season loss since October 19, 2024.
NYU came out strong in the match, controlling the possession for the first 25 minutes.
"We dominated the game in the possession," said Head Coach Scott Waddell. "We really tried to spread them out and create space to play through their block"
In the 21st minute, Meredith Theis put the Violets on the board, sending the ball into the top right of the goal off a pass from Sydney Freese.
As the half went on, Maddy Tohanczyn came up with two big saves in the box off of set piece attempts from the Redhawks to keep the Violets ahead.
The Violets continued to press as the clock ran down, holding their 1-0 advantage and leading in shots 8-5.
"We had a quality first goal and then we stayed organized and got one late as well to seal the deal," added Waddell.
Tusca Mahmoudpour took advantage of a deflection in the 89th minute for a breakaway goal to double the Violets lead.
The Violets finished the game leading in shots, 17-8, 8-5 on-goal.
Julia Spang led in shots for NYU with five. Five other Violets each tallied two shots a piece.
Tohanczyn made four saves in the match.
The Violets return to the pitch on Saturday, September 25, when they take on William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ. Kickoff is set for 5pm.
