The New York University men's soccer team put away John Jay College on Monday, September 14, at Lubetkin Field in Newark, NJ, overcoming an early deficit with an offensive surge to secure a commanding victory.
"We were able to overcome the early goal and remain calm," Head Coach Kim Wyant said. "We did a much better job tonight of sticking to the way that we play."
John Jay struck 25 seconds into the contest, but the Violets found their response 28 minutes in as Demir Calkap buried a shot into the lower-right corner off an assist from Kyle Sakalosky, leveling the match at 1-1.
As the first half neared its close, NYU took the lead in the 37th minute as
Fabio Orozco found the lower-left corner of the net, putting the Violets ahead 2-1.
The Violets wasted little time adding to their lead, as
Tim Brdaric found the back of the net in the 39th minute with a high finish through the center, extending NYU's advantage to 3-1. The home side took that lead to the half.
Opening the second half, the Violets quickly added to their lead in the 49th minute as
Ben Geist found the upper-left corner off an assist from
Giulio Potenti, extending NYU's advantage to 4-1.
In the 54th minute, the Violets capitalized on a penalty kick as Potenti converted from the spot, extending NYU's lead to 5-1 and continuing the team's dominance across the field.
The Violets added another in the 64th minute as Brdaric found the lower-left corner off an assist from Orozco. Brdaric's second goal of the night extended NYU's commanding lead to 6-1.
Following John Jay's opening goal, NYU kept the ball firmly in its attacking third and left the Bloodhounds with little room to generate another opportunity. John Jay recorded just three shot attempts for the entirety of the match, while the Violets finished with a dominant 40 attempts of their own.
"We had multiple goals from multiple players in multiple different ways," Wyant added. "We were able to release some tension from the previous game. I think we're in a really good spot for a very tough match on Saturday at Stevens."
NYU will return to action on Saturday, September 19, at 5:00 p.m., traveling to Hoboken, NJ, to face Stevens.
