New York University Men's and Women's Tennis Head Coach, Horace Choy, has announced his retirement. Having guided the women's team since 1993 and the men's team since 2007, Choy will step down officially on August 11.

A mainstay of the NYU Department of Athletics, Choy posted a 224-190 record as the women's coach. He led the Violets to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023 as NYU earned University Athletic Association (UAA) Coaching Staff of the Year honors. 

As the head coach of the men's squad, his teams posted a 121-132 record.

Combined, Choy has produced a total of 31 All-Americans during his distinguished career.

"Horace has dedicated decades of service to our department and has had a profound impact on countless student-athletes, alumni, and colleagues," said NYU's Director of Athletics, Jake Olkkola. "His unwavering commitment to sportsmanship and the holistic development of our student-athletes has helped shape the culture of our tennis programs while representing NYU with integrity and class."

A 1987 graduate of NYU's School of Business and Public Administration, Choy was also a two-year member of the Violets' men's tennis team. He has been a United States Professional Tennis Association certified teaching pro since 1990.

"I've been very fortunate to have worked with the student-athletes that I have," Choy explained. "Our team members want to play tennis at a high level, excel academically, and still represent the university in a positive way. They will be what I miss most."

Choy's squads combined to produce 29 winning seasons.

"The opportunity to come to know Horace as a colleague and a coach, after knowing him as a student and an athlete here at NYU has been my complete privilege," said Janice Quinn, NYU's Deputy Athletic Director/Senior Women's Administrator. "Horace is first class all the way - as everyone who knows him would attest." 

In Choy's final campaign, the women finished with a 10-5 record, while the men went 10-6. Over his final four seasons, the women were 35-20 and the men went 33-28.

"I'm excited for this next chapter in my life," Choy added. "I look forward to spending more time with my family."
