Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Case Western Reserve

NYU Shuts Out CWRU in Game One, Drops Game Two in Extras

The four-game UAA series between the New York University Violets (11-15, 5-10) and the Case Western Reserve University Spartans (16-17, 5-10) continued with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18, at the Staten Island University Hospital Community Park. NYU entered the day's action holding a 1-0 series lead thanks to a game winning two-run homer by CJ Franchini.

The Violets dominated in game one of the doubleheader, having one of their best defensive performances of the season while scoring double digits for the second straight game. The Spartans responded in the second game with their own game winning home run.

Game 1: 10-0 New York University
The Violets got out to an early 4-0 lead in the second inning. Kosta Mocklis, who has been one of the hottest UAA players at the plate, hit a two-run single to end the innings scoring.

NYU led 5-0 after Dan Argenziano scored an insurance run in the fourth.

The Violets doubled their total to make it 10-0 after six. Mocklis opened the innings scoring with another two-run single and later scored on a double hit by Franchini. Max Oliveira and Matt Dahl each had an RBI to close out the games scoring.

Niket Barot was amazing in the shoutout performance. Albeit just one strikeout, the freshman held CWRU to just four hits through seven innings.

Game one finished after seven due to a run-rule.

Game 2: 8-7 Case Western Reserve University
CWRU opened game two's scoring in the second inning, but in the third Dominic Holton evened the score at one with an RBI double.

The Spartans regained the lead in the following inning, scoring four runs to host their largest lead of the day.

Trailing 5-1, Franchini came up big for the Violets hitting a two-run shot over the right field fence. This marked his second home run of the series and fourth of the season.

Aidan Howladar's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth cut the Spartans lead to just 5-4. Later in the inning, Mocklis smashed the fragile lead with a three-run triple as the Violets took a 7-5 lead.

Case Western scored two runs in the ninth and the Spartans lead-off hitter hit a go-ahead homer in extras to take a 8-7 lead. The Violets failed to get on-base in the final half inning resulting in a loss.
Notable Stats:
  • Mocklis has 9 RBIs in the three games against CWRU
  • NYU posted its second shutout of the season
