The New York University women's soccer team opened its University Athletic Association (UAA) schedule under the lights on Saturday, Oct. 3 on Lubetkin Field in Newark, NJ. The #22-ranked Violets hosted the #21 UChicago Maroons on Saturday evening, in front of a packed crowd for their annual Tear It Up! game.
Just one goal separated the two evenly matched sides, as the visiting Maroons scored the lone tally and held for the win, 1-0.
"We knew we were in for a proper test," said head coach Scott Waddell. "I was proud of our effort in the second half, the way we stepped up, fought and battled."
The two teams combined for just six shots and one save in the first half, as neither group could produce a significant challenge.
UChicago broke the scoreless tie just before the 60th minute as Indira Naylor found Annabel Edwards down the left flank, who found the net on a curling ground ball all alone against the keeper.
NYU's best chances at an equalizer were in the 90th minute off the home side's fourth corner of the game. Chloe Deters received the ball 25 yards from goal with room but her strong shot was blocked. The Violets maintained possession, finding Tusca Mahmoudpour inside the 18-yard box but her two chances at close range did not beat the keeper.
The Violets return to action in seven days for their first UAA road trip against the University of Rochester. Kick off is scheduled for 1:30 PM on Saturday, Oct. 10.
