#24 Women's Soccer Draws With #18 Rochester

Violets Tie on the Road

The #24-ranked New York University women's soccer team hit the road for a University Athletic Association competition against #18-ranked University of Rochester on Saturday, October 10, in Rochester, NY.

The teams walked away tied 1-1.

"I'm proud of the team," said Head Coach Scott Waddell. "Away at Rochester is always tricky, but the energy and effort of the team was very good all game."

The first half was a midfield battle, but it only took one breakaway moment for the Violets to get on the board.

In the 34th minute, Lily Smoley broke away with a ball taking it up the right side of the field. She dodged a defender before sending the ball directly to the head of Sydney Freese, who headed it home to put the Violets up, 1-0.

An opportunity to double the lead came when Sonia Neighbors collected a ball and passed it off to Tusca Mahmoudpour, but the Yellowjackets' Elena McGuire was there to keep it out.

Maddy Tohanczyn came up big in the 58th minute, batting away a Yellowjackets' attempt  that nearly tucked into the top right corner.

With 10 minutes to go, the Yellowjackets were able to equalize off a goal from Jane Mueller.

Rochester out-shot the Violets 10-4, 6-3 on-goal. Tohanczyn stayed focused between the posts, coming up with four saves.

Freese, Mahmoudpour, and Neigbhors each tallied a shot on-goal. Allie Wall added the other attempt for the Violets.

NYU returns to the pitch next Saturday, October 17, to host UAA opponent Emory at Pittser Field at MSU Soccer Park in Montclair, NJ. Kickoff is set for 1:30 PM.
