The #21 New York University women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw against #22 Emory University on Saturday, October 17, at Pittser Field at MSU Soccer Park in Montclair, NJ.
"Emory is one of the top teams and top programs so we knew it was going to be a very challenging game," said Head Coach Scott Waddell. "I feel like we rose to the occasion."
Meredith Theis had an opportunity to put the Violets on the board midway through the first half, sending a ball curling low left from outside the box, But, Eagles' Rachel Carr poked it out.
With time winding down in the first half, Kate Vezzani flicked a pass to Lily Smoley who took a shot that was blocked to keep it even.
Emory almost took the lead with a ball bouncing into the back of the net, but it was called back for offside.
The teams went into the locker room tied 0-0 at the half.
The second half faired in similar fashion with both teams unable to find the back of the net.
Sonia Neighbors had a chance early in the second half that went just wide of the goal. The only other shot for the Violets came from the head of Sydney Freese in the box. However, it was deflected away.
Maddy Tohanczyn made five saves in goal for the Violets.
"We know we can rely on her (Tohanczyn)," added Waddell. "She's really good. We knew they would try to take shots, but it's hard to beat Maddy."
The Violets will hit the road when they travel to Pittsburgh, PA, to take on Carnegie Mellon University on Friday, October 23. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm.
