Violets Drop Doubleheader on Friday

The New York University baseball team was swept in its Friday doubleheader against Kean University in Union, NJ, dropping to 2-3 on the season.

The Violets let a late lead slip away in game one, surrendering eight runs in the eighth inning in an 11-7 loss. In game two, their offense faltered, managing just two runs in a 7-2 defeat as Kean's pitching took control.

Game #1

The Violets held a narrow lead heading into the bottom of the eighth, but their bullpen struggled, allowing eight runs that swung the game in Kean's favor.

The Violets opened the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run from Kosta Mocklis. They extended their lead in the fifth when Nate Pallotta delivered a two-run single, scoring Cam Dunn and Nick Argenziano to make it 3-1. After the Cougars cut the deficit to a single run, Dunn added to the lead in the seventh with a solo homer to left center, giving NYU a 4-2 advantage.

Kean cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the seventh before breaking the game open in the eighth.

In the ninth, Conner Roggero doubled down the left-field line to drive in three runs, but the comeback effort fell short.

Starting pitcher Jonathan Hyman was solid, tossing six innings while allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.

Game #2

After a strong start in the second game, the Violets struggled late, as their offense couldn't mount a comeback against Kean's pitching staff.

The game began with a scoreless first two innings before the Violets were first on the board in the top of the third. CJ Franchini doubled to right field, driving in Roggero to give NYU a 1-0 lead. However, Kean responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs to take a 3-1 advantage.

Then trailing 4-1, the Violets looked to rally in the top of the sixth when Pallotta brought in a run on a fielder's choice. But, that would be NYU's final run of the game as their offense couldn't break through any further.

Starting pitcher Aidan Pawlak (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out four.

Following today's loss, the Violets will look to bounce back in their next match-up against Sage College on Saturday, March 1, at 1:00pm at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park.
