The New York University men's tennis team earned a narrow 4-3 victory over Union College on Sunday, February 23, in Schenectady, NY.
The Violets started strong by capturing the critical doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Boren Zheng and Philip Martin dominated with a 6-1 win, while the No. 2 duo of Jingyuan Chen and Bryan Hui secured a 6-3 victory to give NYU the early lead.
Singles play saw a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. Hui (No. 3) was the first to put NYU on the board in singles with a dominant 6-4, 6-0 win. Zheng (No. 1) followed with a hard-fought victory, 6-2, 7-5.
The decisive point came from freshman Cooper Kline (No. 6), who secured the match in his first collegiate appearance with a clutch 7-6(7), 6-4 win.
"The doubles point was key, with strong play from Zheng, Martin, Chen, and Hui. In singles, Zheng and Hui stepped up, and Kline showed great composure to clinch the match in his first outing. The team showed real grit today," said Head Coach Horace Choy.
The Violets return to action on Sunday, March 2, against Assumption University at the Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx, NY, with play set to begin at 2:00 PM.
