Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Completes UAA Championship Sweep

Violets' Victory Over Case GIves Both NYU BB Squads Outright Titles for First Time in Same Season

The New York University men's basketball team closed out its 2024-25 regular-season home schedule with a 83-55 victory over Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, February 23, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.

The #2-ranked Violets (23-1, 12-1) scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed en route to clinching the outright University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship.

Both the NYU men and women have captured outright UAA titles this season, the first time its ever been done by the Violet squads in the same season.

NYU led 47-26 at halftime and Case Western Reserve (8-16, 4-9) never got closer than 16 the rest of the way.

The Violets' defense was stalwart in the game, holding the Spartans to 33.9 percent shooting (19-of-56) and out-rebounding their opponents 50-22.

Tristan How recorded a double-double for NYU, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Zay Freeney (12 points), Jack Stone (11) and Hampton Sanders (10) also scored in double figures.

NYU celebrated Senior Day on Sunday, with nine Violets being honored in a pregame ceremony: Kawika Akina, Zach Brooker, Freeney, How, Josh Menard, Emmanuel Onuama, Chuma Oyigbo, Brock Susko, and Stone.

"Our senior and grads have been such a large part of what we've been doing," said Head Coach Dave Klatsky. "And to watch Zay's growth from some struggles as a freshman to where he is today is just so rewarding."

The Violets are back on the court for their regular-season finale on Saturday, March 1, when they travel to Waltham, MA, to face Brandeis University. Tip-off is set for 1:00pm.
