Women's Volleyball Splits Matchups at UAA Round Robin #2

Violets Defeat Judges, Fall to Eagles

The New York University women's volleyball team competed in the University Athletic Asssociation Round Robin #2 on Sunday, October 12, in Cleveland, OH, hosted by Case Western Reserve University. The Violets defeated Brandeis University but fell to Emory University, 3-0 and 3-1, respectively.

In its first match of the day, NYU began the opening set down 5-4. However, the Violets used a 12-2 run to take an eight-point lead and never looked back. In the run, NYU totaled four aces as a team and Stella Dillon recorded three kills. The Violets went on to clinch the frame, 25-14.

The second set was much more tightly contested, with neither team leading by more than four. After Brandeis opened up an 8-4 advantage, NYU came back with three straight points.

Later down 14-12, a 5-1 Violets run put them ahead. Though the Judges managed to even the score at 18-18, NYU got back in front with three consecutive points, highlighted by back-to-back Ava Launsbach aces. Brandeis answered with two straight points of its own, but the Violets won four of the set's final five points to end the frame.

The two teams once again traded blows in the third set, as Brandeis began with a 7-3 edge before NYU flipped the scoreboard with a 5-0 run.

The Violets grew their lead to as much as five, up 16-11, but the Judges clawed back by winning eight of the next 10 points to take a one-point advantage. It would be the last time Brandeis scored in the match, as NYU claimed seven unanswered points to finish the sweep. In the 7-0 run, Sarah Beville starred with four aces.

Grace Nelson tallied seven kills, while Launsbach dished out 17 assists, both of which led the team. Beville finished with six aces.

Facing the Eagles in the afternoon slate, the Violets raced out to a 15-8 lead. With NYU later ahead 18-12, Emory climbed its way back into the set with an 8-2 run. The Violets took a brief 22-21 edge, but the Eagles claimed the set by winning the final four points.

NYU got out to another lead in the second frame, up 13-9, but Emory once again came from behind with a 7-2 run.

After the Violets won three consecutive points to retake the lead, the Eagles returned the favor with three straight points of their own. Down 21-20 a few moments later, NYU won four of the next five points to bring up a pair of set points. The Violets were unable to convert, however, as Emory went on to win the set 27-25.

The Eagles led for a majority of the third frame after scoring the set's first four points. After Emory took its largest lead of the stanza at 15-8, the Violets fought back with a 9-2 run to even the score. Four points later, the Eagles took a two-point advantage at 20-18, but NYU once again tied the score by winning three of the next four points.

Back-to-back Emory points gave the Eagles a pair of chances to clinch the match, but the Violets staved off both to stay alive. NYU went on to spoil two more match points en route to clinching the set 29-27.

Both teams exchanged points in the opening stages of the fourth frame, with the score tied 10-10. The Eagles then established a five-point lead using a 6-1 run, but were immediately answered with an 8-2 Violets run to give NYU the edge.

With the Violets leading 20-19 two points later, Emory won five of the next seven to bring up two match points once again. Much like the third set, NYU fought off both chances and jumped ahead 25-24. However, the Violets were unable to force a fifth set, as the Eagles claimed the next three points to win the match.

Three NYU players collected double-digit kills, including Nelson with 13, Chloe Hynes with 12 and Chloe Lemons with 10. Launsbach recorded 29 assists and Beville continued her serving excellence with four aces.

The Violets are set to return home with a match against Hunter College on Friday, October 17, at 7pm at the John A. Paulson Center.
