The New York University women's volleyball team continued its undefeated start to the season with a four-set win over Kean University on Tuesday, September 3, in Union, NJ.
With the win,
the #3-ranked Violets have won their fourth straight match.
NYU set the tone early with an initial 10-4 run, led by
Chloe Hynes' three kills. The Violets maintained their lead throughout and finished off the first set, 25-12.
The start of the second set saw both teams going back and forth. However, NYU forced a Kean timeout following a ferocious kill from
Grace Nelson and a service ace from
Catherine Maffei. The Violets rode this momentum to an eventual 25-20 win.
In a competitive third set, the two teams were tied 15-15 before the Cougars caught fire and went on a 9-5 run, dishing the Violets their first set loss of the season, 21-25.
NYU rebounded to take the fourth and final set, 25-18.
"I thought Kean did a really good job at settling into the match at the start of the third set," said Head Coach
Andrew Brown. "Their attack was efficient and hitting percentage was above .350 in the third set."
Nelson led the way with a season-high 18 kills while Hynes had her best performance as a Violet with 13 kills on a .650 hitting percentage.
Ava Launsbach chipped in with 26 assists and nine digs.
"I think our team did a great job at resetting and not letting a set dictate the match and closing out the match under pressure from Kean," explained Brown. "I think our setters did a really good job making aggressive plays from the serving line and on defense."
The Violets will be back in action on Saturday, September 7, for a doubleheader in Hoboken, NJ, taking on host Stevens at 2:00pm and Manhattanville University at 4:00pm.
