Women's Volleyball Wins Two

Violets Defeat Manhattanville and Host Stevens

The #3-ranked New York University women's volleyball team won a pair of matches hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, September 7, in Hoboken, NJ.

The Violets (6-0) came back to defeat their hosts 3-1 in the opening match, then had little resistance in sweeping Manhattanville University.

In the opener, Stevens won the first set 25-22 before NYU rallied to take the next three 25-22, 26-24, 25-20.

The Violets trailed 24-22 in the pivotal third set, but managed to stave off the Ducks by scoring the final four points. The stretch began with a kill by Chloe Lemons and ended with three straight Stevens errors.

NYU never trailed in the final set.

"I think Stevens played really well, making us buckle down and log into our game plan, said Head Coach Andrew Brown. "We had to switch up our offense and rely on our ability to multi-shot versus hitting the ball hard. I think our defense was consistent, which allowed us to get better each set at lowering their hitting percentage. Our depth was crucial and allowed us to walk away with the win."

Three Violets recorded double-digit kills: Grace Nelson (14), Chloe Hynes (13) and Lemons (11). Yooni Park contributed a match-high 23 digs. Dominique Drust led the way with 27 assists and Ava Launsbach added 16.

The Violets made quick work of Manhattanville in their second match, sweeping the Valiants 25-16, 25-13, 25-19.

NYU scored the first six points of the first set to set the tone of the match. The Violets did fall behind by one point early in the second set and by as many as four in the third. Still trailing 13-11 in the final set, a six-point NYU run gave the team a lead it would never relinquish.

Helena Foord led the way with 12 kills for NYU and Lemons added eight along with a team-high eight digs. Launsbach led with 18 assists and Alden Roberts was right behind with 17.

"Against Manhattanville, our team did a good job respecting our opponents and our offense really locked in," Brown added. "Our setters throughout the course of the day did a really good job."

The Violets return to the court on Sunday to host Bowdoin College at 11:00am at the John A. Paulson Center.
