Men's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw

Gutierrez's Late Goal Provides Equalizer

The New York University men's soccer team rescued a 1-1 draw against the Drew University Rangers on Saturday, September 21, in a home match at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ.

The Violets started slowly as the Rangers threatened goalkeeper Jackson McCloskey's net frequently in the first half, registering four shots to NYU's three.

Drew scored in the 20th minute when James Cahill managed to guide the ball into the bottom right corner off an in-swinging freekick.

"Again, we started slowly and definitely need to turn that trend around," said Head Coach Kim Wyant. "I was very happy with the response. We came out at halftime playing to the level we are capable of."

NYU started to get going attack-wise in the second half, out-shooting the Rangers 11-5 and finally finding an equalizer with 10 minutes to go. Defender Felix Dyckerhoff had a chance to bring the Violets level, with the ball falling to him from a corner. However, his shot was cradled by the Drew keeper.

On the Violets' fifth corner of the game, midfielder Daniel Gutierrez leaped into the air for a bicycle kick that sent the home bench and the crowd into wild celebrations.

"Daniel scored a spectacular goal. We haven't seen anything that spectacular around here lately," said Wyant. "It should be ESPN highlight-worthy,"

The Violets return to action against Baruch College on Sunday, September 29, at noon in another home match at NJIT.
