Women's Volleyball Wins a Pair

Violets Defeat William Paterson and Scranton

The New York University women's volleyball team defeated a pair of opponents on Saturday, September 14, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.

The #7-ranked Violets were tested in two four-set affairs, but overcame 0-1 deficits in both.

In the first match, NYU dropped the first set, but rallied to defeat William Paterson 14-25, 25-6, 25-19, 25-7

After suffering their first loss of the season, 3-2, in their previous match against Bowdoin College on September 8, the Violets came out flat against the Pioneers and dropped the first set.

However, William Paterson did not get to enjoy its lead for long as the Violets quickly rebounded and were dominant in set two.

"After the first set we did a good job making the adjustments, changed our rotation for some better match-ups and our team really locked into the things that are important for us to be successful," said Head Coach Andrew Brown. "If you're getting better each set as the competition is making adjustments, that shows you're playing really good highlighted volleyball."

The third set contained the closest score between the teams as NYU powered through and took the advantage.

The dominance continued into the fourth set as the Violets raced to the finish line.

Grace Nelson finished with a double-double of 14 kills and 13 digs. Ava Launsbach (21) and Dominique Drust (16) each had double-digit assists, while Yooni Park led the way with 19 digs. Helena Foord contributed 10 kills and Jessica Spierenburg added five blocks.

"We did a good job at not giving away any easy points and it translated into unbelievable plays and runs," Brown explained. "We are capable of making that a consistent performance, but we have to do it again and again."

In the second match, NYU fell behind again, but came back for a 21-25, 25-16, 26-24, 25-21 victory.

Nelson once again led the way with 16 kills, and right behind her was Chloe Lemons with 15. Drust paved the way with 29 assists and was supported by Launsbach's 15. Park (18) and Drust (11) had double-digit digs.

"Overall, our players did a great job today in showing confidence in themselves and in each other's ability to execute our game plan," Brown added .

The Violets are back in action at 12:30pm on Sunday when they host Colby College back at the Paulson Center.
