In its third match of the weekend, the
#7-ranked New York University Women's Volleyball team lost to Colby College in four sets on Sunday, September 15, in Manhattan.
After dropping the first two sets, the Violets won the third set, but were ultimately outlasted by the Mules.
The two teams went back-and-forth for the entirety of the first set, with neither side leading by more than four. Down 19-17, NYU scored six consecutive points to go up, 23-19. With the Violets later in front 24-20, Colby stormed back with four straight points to even the score. Though NYU had another chance at set point, the Mules edged out a 28-26 win.
After the Violets began the second set with a 6-5 advantage, Colby scored three consecutive points and did not trail for the remainder of the frame. The score was later tied at 17-17, but an 8-2 run by the Mules gave them the set win.
Despite trailing 5-1 to begin the third set, a 9-1 run, highlighted by three
Jessica Spierenburg kills, put NYU in front for the rest of the stanza. The Violets led by as much as six in the set and finished the frame with a 25-20 win.
NYU was unable to keep pace with the Mules in the fourth set, as Colby opened the stanza with a 12-3 lead and never looked back. After later going down 15-4, the Violets used a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to seven. However, the Mules responded with four consecutive points and eventually clinched the match with a 25-14 set win.
Grace Nelson led NYU with 13 kills, while
Ava Launsbach tallied a team-high 22 assists.
Yooni Park posted her most digs as a Violet with 29.
NYU will stay at home for its next match as it welcomes Johns Hopkins University to the John A. Paulson Center on Friday, September 20 at 7:00pm.
