Baseball Splits at RPI

Violets Win Opener 11-5; Drop Nitecap 8-2

The New York University baseball team split its doubleheader against host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Saturday, April 27, in Troy, NY.

The Violets (24-13) won the first game 11-5, while the Engineers (18-12) took game two 8-2.

In the opener, the Violets broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the fourth and held the lead the rest of the way. Max Oliveira snapped the deadlock with a sacrifice fly which was followed by an RBI single from Dakota Barbet and a two-run single by Nick Argenziano

Connor Roggero's home run in the fifth added another run, and NYU broke it open with six runs over the final three innings. Oliveira produced a two-run double in the seventh with Argenziano adding an RBI single.   

Oliveira's bat stayed hot with another RBI double in the eighth. He finished the game with four RBI's.

Roggero had three hits and scored four runs, Barbet was on base four times (two hits, two walks), while Argenziano had two hits and three RBI's.

Andrew Reid went seven innings for the win, striking out seven.

The Violets suffered their only loss of the four-game series in the nitecap, as RPI scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the first to take control.

NYU's only runs came in the top of ninth inning on Jack Kelman's RBI groundout and Bruno Damiani's RBI single. 

Starter Joe Cetale suffered the loss despite not allowing an earned run.

NYU is back on the field when the Violets host Cairn University on Wednesday night for Senior Day. First pitch on Staten Island is set for 5:00pm.
