New York University's baseball team won both ends of its doubleheader at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday, April 26, in Troy, NY.
The Violets won the opener 11-8 and took game two 8-6, improving to 23-12 on the season.
Game 1: NYU 11, RPI 8
RPI took a 1-0 lead in the first, but NYU scored three in the second on
Joe Cetale's RBI single, a double play during which a run scored, and Cetale coming home on a wild pitch.
The Violets scored two more in the fourth after RBI doubles from
Dakota Barbet and
Harrison Blueweiss. RPI then plated lone runs in the fourth and sixth to make it 5-3 entering the late innings.
But, five NYU runs in the seventh proved to be enough insurance.
Alex VanLandingham started it with an RBI single,
Connor Roggero also drove in a run with a base hit, VanLandingham scored on a wild pitch, and Barbet roped another double to bring in the final two runs of the frame.
RPI scored four across the eighth and ninth, while Blueweiss added NYU's final run on a sac fly, as the Violets held off the hosts' rally to secure victory.
Barbet, Cetale, Roggero,
Max Oliveira (two doubles) and
Nick Argenziano (double, run scored) notched two hits apiece.
Sean Bolin got the pitching win, going six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out seven and walking none.
Game 2: NYU 8, RPI 6
NYU scored six runs across the first three innings, including RBI doubles off the bats of
Richard Beggy and
Cam Dunn. RPI scored two in the bottom of the third, but the Violets got two more runs in the fourth after Blueweiss hit a solo homer and Beggy delivered a sac fly.
RPI plated one in the fifth and three in the sixth, but those ended up being the final tallies of the contest as NYU swept the day.
Roggero, Beggy, Dunn and Blueweiss all had two hits in the win.
Joseph Argenziano earned the win in relief.
The two teams play another doubleheader tomorrow, April 27, beginning at 12:00pm in Troy, NY.
