New York University's baseball team defeated Case Western Reserve University 13-10 on Friday, April 19, at the Staten Island University Hospital Community Park in Staten Island, NY.
This weekend's series is a battle between first and second place in the University Athletic Association (UAA), with NYU improving to 8-5 in the league while CWRU, who have played less Association games, are now 7-2.
NYU opened the scoring in the top of the second, as a Spartan error allowed
Richard Beggy to score before
Dakota Barbet launched a two-run homer to left to make it 3-0.
However, CWRU plated nine runs across the third and fourth to seemingly take control, 9-3. The Violets responded with four in the bottom of the fourth, as another error accounted for the first run then
Nick Argenziano roped a three-run double to bring NYU within two (9-7).
The Spartans' lone run in the top of the fifth was their last of the contest, with NYU scoring three in the bottom of the inning after a wild pitch, error and
Harrison Blueweiss sac fly.
NYU took the lead with three more in the sixth, coming via
Alex VanLandingham's sac fly and RBI singles from both
Connor Roggero and
Max Oliveira.
The final three innings were scoreless as the Violets'
Aidan Dolinsky tossed the last three frames and allowed just one hit, no runs, one walk and fanned three to earn the save.
Miles Kessler got the pitching win after his perfect sixth inning on the bump.
Argenziano, Roggero, Oliveira, Barbet and
Cam Dunn notched two hits apiece in the victory.
The two teams continue their series with a doubleheader tomorrow, April 20, beginning at 12:00pm at SIUH Community Park.
