Softball Suffers Doubleheader Sweep

Violets Defeated Twice by Carnegie Mellon

The New York University softball team hosted Carnegie Mellon University for a University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader on Saturday, April 13, at the College of Staten Island on Staten Island, NY.

The Violets (5-19, 0-10) were defeated by scores of 3-0 and 17-7.  Carnegie Mellon is now 12-10 overalll and 6-4 in the UAA.

In the opener, the Tartans' Amanda Smith was almost perfect, throwing a no-hitter and not allowing a base runner until pinch hitter Alexa Very walked to start the bottom of the seventh.

However, Smith then retired the next two batters to close out the no-no with seven strikeouts.

The Violets' best chance for a hit came in the bottom of the fifth when Caroline Hofmann hit a deep fly ball down the left field that was speared on a diving catch by Jasmine Chao.

The NYU pitchers did their jobs, only allowing three runs and four hits combined. Karleigh Kluever started and took the loss. She went 5.1 innings and was relieved by Monique Kamrowski.

Both teams' offenses broke out in the second game, with Carnegie Mellon scoring six in the top of the first inning and NYU countering with four in the bottom of the frame. Madi Hand accounted for half the runs with a two-run home run while Very had an RBI single.

The Tartans continued its offensive prowess with four more runs in the second, three in the third, another in the fourth, and three more in the fifth.

The Violets scored another run in the third on Hand's second home run, and added two more in the final frame on an RBI double by Chloe Stone and Hand's fourth RBI of the game on a ground out.

Emily Stone started on the mound, followed by Jessie Werthman and Kamrowski again.

Haley Pucci picked up the win for Carnegie Mellon.

The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 9:00am
