Violets Win Two at Brandeis

The New York University baseball team played a University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader against host Brandeis University on Saturday, April 13, in Waltham, MA.

In a prodigious offensive display, the Violets defeated the Judges 19-16 and 15-7.

In a first game that defied description (but we'll give it a try anyway), the Violets came away with a 10-inning, 19-16 victory. NYU overcame a four-run deficit, blew an eight-run lead, tied the game in the top of the ninth, and scored four in the top of the tenth to come away with the marathon victory.

The Violets fell behind 5-1 after two innings, but scored three in the third and four in the fourth to take an 8-5 lead. Nate Pallotta, Richard Beggy and Alex VanLandingham had RBI's in the third. Then, in the fourth, Pallotta added a two-run double and Beggy followed with another double to plate Pallotta.

NYU put six more runs on the scoreboard in the sixth when six different Violets each knocked in a run.

However, that 14-6 lead did not last long as Brandeis plated three in the sixth and six in the seventh to go back in front 15-14.

Undaunted, the Violets rallied to tie it in the ninth. Beggy led off with a double, stole third an out later and eventually scored on Connor Roggero's sacrfice fly.

Then, in the tenth, Pallotta came through with a grand slam and the Violets held off the Judges' rally in the bottom of the inning to secure the roller coaster win.

Pallotta finished the game with five hits, seven RBI's and four runs scored. Beggy had four hits and Cam Dunn scored five times.

Tyler Tedeschi picked up the win with two innings of relief and Ansel Balmer recorded the save.

The second game also featured an offensive explosion by the visitors, just not as grandiose.

After falling behind 1-0, the NYU offense came to life with four runs in the second, three in the third, and one each over the next two frames.

The Violets did not plate a runner in the sixth, but rebounded with two in the seventh and four in the eighth to cap off the day's scoring.

VanLandingham went 4-for-4 in the contest with three RBI's. Harrison Blueweiss chipped in with three hits and three RBI's, while Dunn and Nick Argenziano each knocked in a pair.

Starter Paul Guerne went four innings and only allowed one run while striking out seven.

Arvin Chona picked up the win in relief.

The two teams will be back at it on Sunday for another doubleheader starting at noon.
