The New York University softball team suffered a 6-5 loss to
#7-ranked Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, March 30, in Cleveland, OH.
The Violets (5-12, 0-3) took an early lead in the University Athletic Association (UAA) contest, scoring in the top of the first on
Lizzy Smith's double followed by
Alyssa Quary's RBI single.
After the Spartans (18-2, 3-0) scored three in the bottom of the bottom of the second, NYU tied it with two in the top of the third as
Nicole Cicchetti scored on a throwing error and Smith came across on a wild pitch.
The score remained tied until NYU pushed across two runs in the top of sixth.
Lily Candelaria doubled to lead off the frame and
Madi Hand homered later in the inning to put the Violets back in the lead.
However, it was short-lived as Case Western Reserve scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning and sent the Violets to their third loss of the weekend.
Smith finished with two of the Violets' five hits.
Emily Stone started for the Violets and went the first four innings. She was replaced by
Jessie Werthman who was the hard-luck loser.
The teams return to the field on Sunday at 11:00am to complete the four-game series.
