New York University's softball team began University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Friday, March 29, at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.
The seventh-ranked Spartans took both ends of the doubleheader, winning game one 10-4 and game two 11-1.
NYU opened the scoring on the day though, as
Nicole Cicchetti's bunt single with the bases loaded put the first run on the board in the top of the second.
Margaux Lesser followed with a sac fly to give the Violets a 2-0 advantage after one-and-a-half.
CWRU matched the Violets with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second, but NYU regained the lead with a run in the third which came on
Lizzy Smith's sac fly to center. But, the Spartans plated two more in their half of the third to go up 4-3.
The fourth inning was scoreless, but NYU tied things up in the top of the fifth when
Lindsey Baron doubled Lesser home. However, Case Western Reserve scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth to secure the win.
Baron had the Violets' lone multi-hit game, going 3-for-3 with a run scored in addition to her RBI double.
Alyssa Quary,
Mia Lemmon and
Chloe Stone notched a hit apiece in game one.
In game two, the Spartans opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. NYU got one back in the top of the second on
Emma Aridi's RBI single, but it went on to be the Violets' lone run of the contest.
CWRU pushed five runs across in the second and third before a four-run fifth ended the game 11-1.
Madi Hand was 2-for-2 with a run scored and a double while Lesser, Smith, Aridi and Cicchetti recorded a hit each.
NYU and CWRU continue the UAA series tomorrow, March 30, with a single game at 4:00pm in Cleveland.
