All-Americans
Cooper Pontelandolfo (157) and
Jason Geyer (174) of New York University's wrestling team concluded action at the 2024 NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday, March 16, at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, WI.
The Violet pair reached the semifinals of their respective weight classes, propelling NYU to 11th place out of 66 teams.
In the 157-pound semis, Pontelandolfo fell via pin to Peter Kane of Williams College, but bounced back with a 5-0 win over Stevens Tech's Ryan Smith to advance to the third place match. He then earned a 7-3 victory over Luther's Clayton McDonough to claim third.
Pontelandolfo is now a three-time All-American, taking sixth as both a freshman and sophomore before his career-best third place finish this year.
Geyer, a graduate student, was also pinned in the 174-pound semis before a 15-0 tech fall victory in 2:15 against Oswego State's Charlie Grygas to advance to the third place match. Geyer lost the third-place bout, but his fourth-place finish at his second NCAA Championships was a strong conclusion to his collegiate career.
"Proud of the resilience that Jason and Coop showed coming back from tough semifinal losses," said Associate Head Coach
Corey Luce. "I know how devastated Coop was and he went out there and got the second best thing.
"It was great to see Jason finish up his career as an All-American," Luce added. "The kid does everything right in the room and is a great role model and he will be missed."
