The
#22-ranked New York University women's volleyball team fell to Salisbury University in four sets on Friday, October 18, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
After the Violets took the second set to even the score, the Sea Gulls claimed the final two frames to clinch the match.
Trailing 10-4 to begin the opening stanza, Salisbury scored five straight points to get to within one. Later down 14-11, another three consecutive points by the Sea Gulls tied the score. The two teams then went back-and-forth to bring the score to 18-17 with NYU ahead before the Sea Gulls went on a 4-0 run to take a three-point advantage. Though the Violets did win back-to-back rallies, Salisbury won three of the final four points to take the set 25-22.
NYU led by as many as seven in the second frame, up 15-8, but a 10-2 run by the Sea Gulls gave Salisbury a one-point edge. In the remainder of the stanza, the Sea Gulls fended off three sets points, but the Violets eventually prevailed 29-27.
With NYU ahead 5-4 to start the third set, Salisbury used a 9-1 run to stay ahead for the remainder of the frame. Down 17-10, the Violets managed to close the gap to two with a 5-0 run, and eventually cut the deficit to 21-20. After Salisbury won the next three rallies, the Violets staved off three set points, but were unable to complete the comeback, losing 25-23.
The Sea Gulls did not trail at any point in the fourth frame after getting out to a 9-3 advantage. NYU got to within one after winning the next five points, but Salisbury responded with a 4-0 run. Later leading 15-12, a 5-0 run by the Sea Gulls put Salisbury ahead by eight. The Sea Gulls went on to clinch the match with a 25-15 set win.
Grace Nelson had a season-best 24 kills on the night.
Yooni Park collected 21 digs while
Dominique Drust dished out 21 assists.
The Violets will play two more matches on Senior Day, beginning on Saturday at 10:00am. They host University of Mount Saint Vincent back at the Paulson Center then take on Stockton University at 2:30pm to close out the weekend.
