New York University's
11th-ranked women's volleyball team won both of its matches on Saturday afternoon at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan. The Violets defeated local foe Hunter College in four sets (25-15, 25-18, 18-25, 25-15) and swept Endicott College (25-16, 25-12, 25-14) to improve to 14-2 on the season.
"Today we took care of business, both matches against regionally ranked teams and teams that went to the NCAA Tournament last year," said head coach
Andrew Brown. "Hunter's a really competitive team...they had this match circled and our team did a good job of battling the adversity and keeping the motivation on our side of the net."
NYU didn't commit any attack errors in the opening set against Hunter, hitting .414 as a team while the Hawks' six miscues aided NYU in a 25-15 victory.
The Violets led for the majority of the second set, but Hunter came within three late (21-18) on a Tionna Moss kill. NYU responded with four consecutive points, however, capped off by an
Ava Launsbach ace to take the set 25-18.
Brown rotated his squad a bit in the third and Hunter capitalized, limiting the Violets to a match-low .088 hitting percentage. The script was flipped towards the end of the frame as NYU came within three at 21-18 before the Hawks scored four straight to win the third.
The fourth set was competitive early on as NYU led by just two, 13-11, after an Izabella Williams kill. But, the Violets closed the frame on a 12-4 run for a convincing 25-15 triumph to win the match.
Sarah Lattan had a career- and team-high eight kills (.375) while
Ella Weider contributed seven and
Chloe Lemons and
Haley Holz added six apiece.
Launsbach finished with team highs of 21 assists and six aces, along with five digs.
Lindsey Hirano posted a match-high 17 digs with six assists and
Dominique Drust contributed 10 assists and four digs.
Against Endicott, NYU recorded 18 kills on .455 hitting in the first set while limiting the Gulls to six on .238. A 7-0 run in the middle of the frame gave the Violets a cushion as they rolled to a 25-16 win.
NYU hit an impressive .520 in the second set, once again with zero attack errors, and led the whole way en route to a 25-12 victory to set up the sweep.
The Violets scored the first five points in the third and didn't look back from there, closing the frame on an 8-1 run to secure the sweep.
"Against Endicott we had a balanced attack overall which is what we need to do," Brown added. "We need to be multi-dimensional as opposed to predictable. Our hitters did a really good job of being super efficient in terms of attack percentage."
Holz and Weider tied for the match high with nine kills each while
Grace Nelson finished with eight,
Elise Curtin had seven and
Camille Nazor added six.
Launsbach and Hirano tied for the match high in digs with nine apiece while Launsbach (16) and Drust (11) both posted double-digit assists.
NYU is back on its home court Sunday, October 1, taking on 14th-ranked Wesleyan University (CT) at 3:00 p.m.
