Softball Drops a Pair to Manhattanville

Violets fall to 14-10 on the season

New York University's softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader against Manhattanville College on Wednesday night at the College of Staten Island in Staten Island, NY.

The Violets fell 11-3 in the opener and lost game two 8-3 in which Emma Aridi went 2-for-3 at the place while driving in all three of NYU's runs.

In game one, Manhattanville produced one run on a pair of hits in the top of the first and tacked on another in the second behind two doubles to take an early 2-0 lead. A scoreless third inning followed, but the Valiants pushed five runs across in the fourth to go up 7-0.

Four more Manhattanville runs in the fifth made it 11-0, but NYU didn't go down without a fight. A walk, error and single from Margaux Lesser loaded the bases for the Violets with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Hannah Becker delivered a sac fly then Madi Hand notched a two-out, two-run single up the middle to cut into the deficit. But, the Valiants' starting pitcher Charli Shinstine induced a pop out on the next batter to end the contest.

Lesser was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored while Hand and Samantha Burggraf accounted for NYU's two other hits.

Jessie Werthman entered the circle with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the fifth and got out of the jam with a pop out to first for the first scoreless pitching outing of her career.

In game two, Aridi roped a two-run double down the left field line to give NYU a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Violet starter Marina Egbert allowed just one hit and two baserunners throughout the first three frames as NYU maintained its 2-0 advantage entering the fourth.

However, Manhattanville plated three in the top of the fourth and three more in the fifth to regain control. Aridi drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth for NYU's final run of the game as the rally stalled from there.

Aridi collected the 10th multi-hit game of her rookie season while Bella Dunning also finished 2-for-3 with a run scored for her first multi-hit game of the year.

Angelina Biele relieved Egbert in the circle as she tossed three innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out five.

NYU returns to action with a four-game University Athletic Association (UAA) series against Emory University this weekend. Game one is scheduled for Friday, April 7, back at the College of Staten Island for a 6:00 pm first pitch.
