New York University's
10th-ranked women's volleyball team won both of its matches at University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #3 on Sunday in Waltham, MA.
The Violets defeated the University of Chicago in straight sets before taking down Carnegie Mellon University in four to finish the UAA regular season campaign in second with a 5-2 record.
"Today was a very impressive outing by the team," said Head Coach
Andrew Brown. "We did a good job at being dialed in defensively and physical with our offensive attack. Both teams really put up a good fight against us and forced us to lock in at pressure moments and execute."
In the day's opening match, Chicago led for much of the first set. But, with the Maroons leading 19-16, NYU closed the frame on a 9-3 run to win 25-22.
Haley Holz,
Grace Nelson and
Camille Nazor had two kills apiece in the set while Chicago committed seven service errors.
The Violets never trailed in the second en route to a 25-18 victory. Nelson had five kills in the period while NYU totaled 3.5 blocks and limited Chicago to .049 hitting to set up the sweep.
NYU controlled the third set as well, going on to win 25-17 behind seven kills from Holz in the frame and 5.0 team blocks which again limited the Maroons to sub-.100 hitting (.061).
Holz (13) and Nelson (12) combined for 25 kills while recording five digs apiece.
Leela Anvekar totaled five aces, three total blocks and three kills, Nazor had five kills and seven total blocks and
Elise Curtin notched five total blocks herself.
Ava Launsbach posted a 15-assist, 12-dig double-double,
Lindsey Hirano finished with a match-high 16 digs and
Dominique Drust dished out 13 assists.
"I'm super happy going 5-2 with another successful UAA season," Brown said. "This puts the team in a good position to close out our last two weeks of tough, non-conference play."
That fifth UAA triumph came in the afternoon against Carnegie Mellon with the Violets cruising to a 25-11 win in the first set. NYU built a 13-8 lead then closed the frame on a 12-3 run as Holz delivered seven kills in the set.
The Violets again built a lead in the second and had to hold off a late push by the Tartans to claim a 25-22 victory. Nazor paced the offense this time with six kills in the set while the team produced five blocks to limit CMU's hitters.
Carnegie Mellon fought in the third to avoid being swept, however, as NYU committed nine attack and service errors which allowed the Tartans to nab a 25-22 win and force a fourth.
The Violets trailed early in the third but turned things around, eventually holding a 19-16 advantage before outscoring the Tartans 6-3 the rest of the way to win 25-19 and take the match.
Holz again led the way with 15 kills, Nazor finished with 12 and Nelson chipped in eight. Hirano (26 digs, 10 assists), Launsbach (21 assists, 10 digs) and Drust (12 digs, 10 assists) each recorded a double-double in the win.
"This will prepare us for the conference tournament in a few weeks," Brown added. "Haley (Holz) did a great job all around and our block was huge this weekend."
The Violets head into the final stretch of the regular season when they travel to Stockton University on Friday, October 27, for a 4:00 p.m. first serve in Galloway, NJ.
