The New York University men's soccer team fell 2-1 to SUNY New Paltz in its 2022 home opener on Saturday, September 10, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
The Violets (2-1-1) fell behind 2-0, but pulled within one on
Joe Leslie's goal at 78:40.
NYU pressured Hawks' goalkeeper Christian Micheli over the final 12 minutes, recording two of its 11 shots, but could not net the equalizer.
New Paltz (3-1-1) scored early in the contest, when Tim Kane converted off a corner kick after collecting a rebound.
Kane scored again (47:44) early in the second half off a feed from Michael Horner.
The Violets out-shot the Hawks 11-8, but only had three shots on goal to New Paltz' four.
Micheli and NYU goalkeeper
Luca Mancuso each recorded a pair of saves.
"They out-worked us and got to more of the 50-50 balls," explained NYU Head Coach
Kim Wyant. "We didn't play smart and allowed them to score on sets even though it was an emphasis going into the game."
The Violets will return to Gaelic Park and host Stevens on Tuesday, September 13, at 7:00pm.
