Women's Tennis Takes Down Rochester

Violets Sweep Doubles and Take 5 of 6 Singles Matches

The New York University Women's Tennis Team traveled upstate to play the University of Rochester on Saturday, March 26, for the first time in nearly three years.

The Violets were victorious 8-1, losing only one singles match.

"Today's win was well-deserved," Head Coach Horace Choy commented. "We started out sweeping the doubles and carried that into the singles play."

The competition began well with an early win, as the #1 doubles team of Karina Jensrud and Carol Plakk took down the Rochester team of Cami Ruiz-Vega and Josephine Libby 8-5.

The momentum continued with the teams of Jimena Menendez and Emily Baxter (#2 doubles) and Phoebe Su and Lynn Robinson (#3 doubles) winning their respective matches 8-4, 8-7 (6).

The women continued to shine in singles by taking home five wins, two of them in straight sets. Menendez and Plakk quickly won their matches 6-2, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-1, respectively.

Two and four singles (Jensrud and Baxter) faced fierce competition and took their opponents to a third-set tiebreaker. Jensrud won 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. Baxter lost a hard-fought first set 6-7 (6), but returned to win the next two 6-4, 10-7. At six singles, Robinson won an eight-game pro set 8-3. Last to finish was Su, falling to Rochester's Olivia Waysack 8-5.

"I'm happy for the women," Choy added. "They have been working hard and improving with each match."

The Violets will be back in action tomorrow on Sunday, March 27, when they travel to Geneva, NY, to play William Smith College in another dual match.
